Hey guys,
I'm new to the world of Appelgorod and larping. I live in the LA county area. It's something that I've always wanted to try. Although, I've done things like it online. I spend my free time roleplaying, as in typing up stories with other individuals complete with characters, settings and plot.
I'm in sort of an awkward position to just jump into the battle up the street. (La Crescenta) First, I'm 17 and live with my parents, whom I might add are a little tentative to any kind of role playing whether is has been rping or cosplaying. I really don't know what they are afraid of since they trust me, but I've already been called a "nerd" "geek" and "strange" by both my parents anytime I mention I'm involved in these things.
That brings me to my next point: I don't think I could bring myself to tell them that I'm larping. Hell I'm not ashamed, but I fear for my reputation. Here's what I think a conversation might sound like.
Dad: What is this that I'm signing?
Me: A permission slip to go to a LARP event.
Dad: What's LARP?
Me: Live action role-playing
Dad: With who--
Me: You know...uh... that movie we saw "Role Models"...that
Dad: Really? -shakes head, rolling eyes, and laughs nervously-
etc etc...
If I didn't have to sign that damn form, I'd be over at the next battle in a heart beat. Is there some way around that? And getting in trouble for leaving the house mysteriously isn't an issue, they let me roam as I please. Hell my mom sent me to Alaska by myself when I was 13.
Well now to get on with it. A little bit about characters and rping.
1) Is there a lot of roleplaying between peoples' characters between and/or before battles? I'm especially fascinated by interacting with others in character.
2) Now I'd like to know if I'm doing a good job of leaving spaces in my character so there's room to collaborate with others. Improvements I could make would be great.
Riley was orphaned at a young age in a land where the people were divided among two loyalties; the red and blue. His/her parents were active (and much opposed to) participants in politics for the red before his/her mother was murdered and his dad disappeared. Riley has been forced to live the life as a lone wolf which has damaged his internal nature. He yearns for family like figures and friendship but mistrust runs deep in the neighboring land that he strives to become apart of(blue), deviating from his family lines.
In addition from Riley's background his self-raising has widened a social crevice between himself and others. Though extremely loyal to those that make themselves available and curiosity driven antics he's reckless with the emotions of others. Because companionship was absent for most of his life he is sometimes careless about what comes out of his neglected jaw muscles. Though sometimes it takes a while to realize that he's a bit out of practice or simply doesn't mean to offend thus oblivious signs of sore emotions. When Riley is met with the realization that he has hurt someone he is unconditionally sorry and disdainful of himself. When beginning new acquaintances this is the common breaking point leading to another journey on his own.
On a completely different scale; for being just a child Riley has grown up remarkably, learning the merciless ways of survival and loosing innocence to deception. Having matured in a hostile world, he has fought fire with fire, and darkness with darkness. He has killed once before but refuses to follow the lore of; once you kill one man the next life is easier. Mother Nature being his most present parent has taught him that the harvesting of a life is only justified one's own survival. The rest goes to waste, loosening one of the many threads of the universe. When it comes time to battle, Riley will find himself battling two fronts the enemy and one inside--to prove his loyalty to the land he was not born in.
((Plot immersion: Riley could be sought after if others think he knows his dad's location but Riley has no idea. This could lead to aggressive interrogation. Even the smallest of traits and clues could help the other side in their search for the runaway politician. Riley would be the only direct link to his dad's throat--in their own land. Would Riley give information to rat out his father, to become part of a better nation?))
3) If I do pursue larping with Appelgorod what are some tips to meeting and pairing up with new people? Should I start making friends online and then meet them there?
Thanks for reading my lengthy introduction! I hope I get to meet some of you soon. =)
